Celine Dion fans, rejoice! A new documentary chronicling the iconic singer’s life and recent health battles is set to premiere this summer. Titled “I Am: Celine Dion,” the feature-length film offers a behind-the-scenes look at the legendary artist as she grapples with Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS).
The trailer reveals Dion talking directly to her fans, including during vulnerable moments of emotion and release. “I’m working every day. But I have to admit, it’s been a struggle,” the iconic songstress says at one point in the trailer as she hints at a possible return to the stage and touring. The documentary offers behind-the-scenes looks at Dion and her children and a health journey that has her coping with her illness.
Living with Stiff Person Syndrome:
The documentary, directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Irene Taylor, goes beyond just a career retrospective. It delves into the challenges Dion faces due to SPS, an incurable condition causing progressive muscle stiffness. This has significantly impacted her ability to sing and perform.
“I miss it so much, the people. I miss them,” an emotional Dion reveals in the trailer, followed by footage of her in the recording booth. These scenes highlight her ongoing battle to return to the concert stage, which includes physical and vocal therapy to regain control of her muscles.
A Long Road to Diagnosis:
In a separate interview with Vogue, Dion details the arduous journey towards diagnosis and rehabilitation. Diagnosed in 2022, Dion reveals, “It’s not just about vocal exercising and doing Pilates. It’s rehabilitation physically and vocally, emotionally and spiritually — the whole shebang.”
She emphasizes her desire for transparency, stating, “I want this story to be told in a classy way. I respect my fans and myself enough for them to know the full truth.” The Prime Video documentary chronicles her progress as she navigates this new reality.
Raising Awareness for SPS:
The Vogue interview sheds light on Dion’s initial struggles with her voice, dating back to 2008. However, the relentless demands of touring and her Las Vegas residency masked the underlying condition. It wasn’t until the pandemic sidelined her in 2020 that doctors were finally able to pinpoint the culprit: Stiff Person Syndrome.
“It probably sounds very strange to say this to you, but when I was diagnosed, I was happy. I was finally able to move with the wave, not against it,” she told Vogue.
With the documentary, Dion hopes to raise awareness for SPS and encourage others who may be experiencing similar symptoms to seek medical attention. “I hope that the documentary doesn’t frighten people, but awakens people to SPS. … It took 17 years for me—please don’t wait that long,” she insists.
Dion’s Return to the Spotlight:
As Dion slowly steps back into the public eye, she is set for a primetime interview with Today co-host Hoda Kotb on June 11th, marking her first television appearance since the diagnosis.
“I Am: Celine Dion,” the Amazon documentary chronicling her journey, will debut on June 25th. This intimate exploration promises to showcase Dion’s resilience and unwavering spirit in the face of adversity.
