Cenovus Energy Inc. (TSX:CVE) reported third-quarter net earnings of $3.36 billion, or $1.83 per diluted share, up from $1.29 billion, or 72 cents, a year earlier, as record upstream production topped one million barrels of oil equivalent per day for the first time.
The Calgary-based oilsands producer said Wednesday that adjusted funds flow, a non-GAAP measure, was $5.02 billion, or $2.74 per diluted share, compared with $2.47 billion, or $1.38, in the third quarter of 2025. Free funds flow was $3.57 billion. Net earnings were up from $2.87 billion in the second quarter of 2026.
By our calculation from the company’s reported figures, net earnings were 161 per cent higher than a year earlier and 17 per cent higher than in the second quarter, while upstream production of 1,024 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day (MBOE/d) was 23 per cent above the 833 MBOE/d of the third quarter of 2025 and 5.5 per cent above the second quarter.
“We exceeded one million BOE per day of production in the quarter for the first time ever,” chief executive Jon McKenzie said in the release. Oil sands production set a quarterly record of 833 MBOE/d, with records at Foster Creek (248,000 barrels a day), Christina Lake (381,000) and Sunrise (70,000). Oil sands operating costs fell to $10.23 a barrel, down more than 50 cents from the second quarter.
Cenovus said upstream operating margin slipped to $4.5 billion from $4.9 billion in the second quarter because of lower benchmark oil prices. The downstream business offset that: operating margin rose to $1.8 billion from $1.0 billion, with crude unit utilization at 92 per cent even as the Lima Refinery in Ohio went through a planned turnaround that was completed in October. Adjusted market capture in U.S. refining was 88 per cent, up from 67 per cent, helped by small refinery exemption waivers received for the Superior Refinery. Excluding such non-operational items, the company said, capture would have been about seven per cent lower.
Total revenues were $16.0 billion, down from $17.4 billion in the second quarter. Net debt fell by $2.4 billion from the second quarter to $3.0 billion. Cenovus returned $1.9 billion to shareholders in the quarter, including $1.5 billion in share buybacks and $403 million in dividends.
The results come weeks after Cenovus agreed on Oct. 5 to acquire Athabasca Oil Corp. (TSX:ATH) in a cash and stock deal valued at about $12 per Athabasca share, or an implied enterprise value of $5.7 billion. Cenovus said the deal would add about 45,000 barrels of oil equivalent a day of current production and 1.3 billion barrels of proved plus probable reserves, as disclosed by Athabasca. It still needs approval from Athabasca shareholders and the Court of King’s Bench, and Cenovus expects it to close in December.
