Edmonton’s Winterscapes photo contest challenges residents to create a winter work of art in their yard and prove it with pictures.
Participants can use snow, ice, lights, ornaments and winter-themed scenery in their front yard or in a public space, and submit a photo online. Good examples of such public spaces include parks and community leagues, according to a release from the city Monday.
The three categories are Winter Art, Winter Garden or Winter Play. Entrants can nominate their own creation or something that just catches their eye. One entry per individual/group is allowed per week, and each “winterscape” can only be nominated once.
While supplies last, every nominee will receive a snowman building kit. There will also be weekly draws for a gift card to one of Edmonton’s winter patios, which are listed on the city’s #yegwinterpatios website, between Jan. 16 and Feb. 27.
Three finalists in each of the categories will be selected to receive a Winterscape Award from an internal judging panel, for nine prizes in total.
A special award will be given to the Winterscapes judging panel’s favourite front yard, and one school stands to win a themed prize.
Nominations are accepted until Feb. 27, according to the release. All submitted photos will be posted on the City of Edmonton’s Facebook page for public voting.

The city asks that you do not include images of people or of pets/domestic animals in your photos, for the sake of privacy. Photos can be accepted in a range of digital file formats including GIFs, TIFs and BMPs, but JPGs and PNGs are preferred – with the further qualifier that photos should have a minimum of doctoring, nothing beyond removing dust, cropping and “reasonable adjustments” to exposure, colour and contrast.
The “winterscape” must be human-made and be visible from the street, and builders must have the property owner’s permission to be there.
