Environment Canada has issued a yellow freezing rain warning for Baie-Comeau and the Manic-5 area on Quebec’s North Shore, with roads and walkways expected to turn icy from Tuesday evening into Wednesday morning.
The weather agency said the freezing rain could leave an ice build-up of two to four millimetres. It is expected inland, over higher terrain and along the stretch of Highway 138 that runs from Baie-Comeau to Baie-Trinité.
Environment Canada said temperatures will rise Wednesday morning, and the freezing rain will change to rain. The warning was issued Monday and is in effect until Wednesday morning.
“Roads and walkways will likely become icy and slippery,” the agency said in its warning. It asked residents to keep watching alerts and forecasts, and to report severe weather by email to [email protected] or on social media using #QCStorm.
Drivers on Highway 138 should allow extra time Tuesday night and early Wednesday, slow down and check Québec 511 for road conditions before leaving. Current alerts for every region are posted on Environment Canada’s weather site.
The warning comes as other parts of the country brace for wet and wintry weather. Heavy rain and snow are hitting B.C.’s north coast around Terrace, and freezing rain was in the forecast for parts of Saskatchewan late last week, as we reported in our Prairie weather coverage.
