When the Harbourfront Gives Foundation team thought about the best way to help families in need this holiday season, it set an ambitious goal: provide 10,000 meals to families across the country through Food Banks Canada.
The Harbourfront Gives Foundation mobilized the talent and drive of the employees at Harbourfront Wealth Management, and within 24 hours donations soared past the 10,000-meal mark. The team decided to create a new increased goal of 50,000 meals and in just two weeks, that goal was also exceeded. Amazingly, with the commitment and generosity of Harbourfront Wealth Management’s CEO, Danny Popescu, the impact was further increased! Mr. Popescu matched and doubled the team’s impressive fundraising results, resulting in the Harbourfront Gives Foundation providing 151,000 meals to families in Canada this holiday season through Food Banks Canada.
Across the country, more people are turning to food banks than ever before. There has likely never been a more difficult time for food banks in Canada. Many people are visiting for the first time, making the difficult choice to ask for help because their money simply isn’t stretching far enough to cover their expenses. It is estimated that Canada’s most vulnerable made almost 1.5 million visits to food banks in March 2022 alone.
Food banks are dealing with incredible volatility, from changes in the availability of food donations to decreased access to methods of transporting food where it’s needed, in addition to weather crises that call on food banks to operate through floods and fires, as they did this past year in British Columbia in particular.
Food Banks Canada provides national leadership to relieve hunger today and prevent hunger tomorrow, in collaboration with the food bank network from coast-to-coast. The vision of this charity is to ensure no one needs to go hungry, anywhere in Canada. Over the past decade, Food Banks Canada has sourced and shared almost 1.4 billion pounds of food, while sharing $168 million in funding to maximize collective impact and strengthen local resources.
The Harbourfront Holiday Meals campaign is one of many Harbourfront Gives Foundation initiatives aimed at providing a lifeline to people and communities across Canada. The Foundation contributes to Canadian-approved charities aligned with its core values as an organization. Beneficiaries include organizations supporting health, children, education, and community development, both locally and around the world.

The Challenges of Loneliness
Feeling lonely? You know that loneliness isn’t just about being alone – some people are happy on their own, and it’s not about how many people you know either. Do you feel connected? That is what it’s all about. Our strong connections often produce a person who tends to be happier, healthier, and more productive. Those who do not feel a connection, often are isolated, misunderstood, and depressed, often taking a physical toll upon people.
Your immune system may be finding it harder to fight an illness you have. Did you know that part of the reason may be that loneliness may have triggered some hormones in your body when you are stressed, diming how well your immune system functions? If you are lonely for a long period, your blood pressure is more likely to go up. Again, stress is a factor influencing your body due to loneliness. One’s health is essentially affected by the state of your mind, whether you are happy or sad, lonely or connected to others. Scientific studies have found exercise as the one element that can bring lonely people outside of themselves, connecting with others and nature. Going for a walk, or strolling with your friend or neighbor chips away at the hold loneliness may have upon you. Being active with pals is an excellent way to grow in relationships and expand on your self-worth.
Games are another way to snap yourself out of the gloom that loneliness encases us within. Mental sharpness is the answer. Games, group challenges such as chess, and board games challenge our knowledge and mental capacities while connecting us to other participants. If you are elderly, this challenge is essential in fighting mental illnesses like Dementia and Alzheimer‘s. An active body and mind unite us to be fine and healthy.
The opposite of health is of course friends to loneliness. If you are a smoker, a practitioner of a habit most people look down on, you can find yourself alone in a corner someplace. Loneliness can and often will make you depressed, and depression is well-known as an isolating agent within society. Alone, segregated from others, your depression may very well drive you to distraction, and ultimately overeating. As the funny man John Candy once said “when I am down and alone, a pizza will always be found”. Weight gain within a society that objectifies thin and full-bodied people, can often isolate you. When people see only what is in front of them, but not the person within, depression and loneliness can follow.
When depressed and alone you need to find things that will keep you busy, and distracted from your own misery. Drinking Booze and possibly illicit drugs can follow. The deeper you get into possible addiction the more isolated you become. Alone again. Cannot sleep? Well, tough times often make your sleep more difficult, perhaps leading to insomnia. What a mess.
“Always look on the bright side of life” (Monty Python). Simplistic perhaps but effective. It takes courage to get in front of others, share yourself with people who could challenge and question you, and look upon you as judge and jury. Sure it can be difficult but know you are the most important person in the world, and you share this planet with other important people. You are all different even when you appear to not be, that’s our worldly routine sticking its boring head into the conversation. And the conversation is key, that we talk, sing, play, and connect with others. Who gives a damn what the others think right? Who is worthy? We all are in our own special way.
European Energy Needs Within a Historic Time
Due to circumstances beyond their control many nations are reversing or reimagining their energy policies. France has passed a bill on the acceleration of procedures relating to their new nuclear facilities, dismissing their entire public sessions in the Senate and simply removing their past objective of reducing to 50% the share of nuclear power in electricity production against the more than 75% used today. The reduction target to 50% was Frances’s flagship measure for the energy transition law of 2015, a building block of Frances 5 year energy plan. The plan to reach 50% by 2025 had already been postponed to 2035 and beyond. President Macron wishes to keep the framework of the plan while dealing with his nation’s energy needs. Accusing Macron of lacking political vision, the opposition viewed his decision as moving backward at a time when needed political courage and futuristic decision-making were required. President Macron needed to flush his nation’s energy generation which France was to share with many other EU Nations lacking the needed power to heat their homes. The Russia-Ukrainian War’s influence on the EU is sound and significant. Russia supplies a majority of the EU’s energy requirements and has weaponized its ability to supply energy to energy-poor nations. Germany, Brussels, Scandinavia, France, and the Southern portion of the EU Alliance depend on Russian energy.
Energy is being portioned to individual customers, allowing governmentally approve portions and no more. The cost of fuel and carbon-based energy has skyrocketed throughout the EU. European Politicians are attempting to decarbonize energy, but economic, political, and military needs are manipulating these attempts, hopefully for a limited time. European Nations that can provide coal for energy has returned to the harvesting of this dirty material. Beggars must flow with the tides of history.
History tells us that the use of all available energy options is on the table, driving backward Europe’s decarbonization policy’s at; least 3-5 years. Coal from Canada, America, and the UK are flowing into Europe along with natural gas supplies. While this is going on, nuclear power plants that were to be rehabilitated or closed are not only open but running at full power generation.
Weather announcements proclaim a severe winter will hit Europe, Ukraine, and Russia. Whatever energy source is available, it’s cost and availability will be scarce and very high indeed. The Middle Eastern energy glut will also come to Europe’s assistance with exceedingly high prices. The EU’s political criticisms of the Saudi’s-Kuwait-Iranian abuses domestically, political assassinations, and human rights abuses of the past have influenced Middle Eastern responses in kind. Never piss off a supplier of future needed products right? America has no real influence on the obviously preferred supplier of energy to the EU, the Middle Kingdoms.
The EU in Brussels needs to consolidate its overall needs, factor in future climatic events during this winter, and move towards a united energy front. All sources of energy in Europe will be allowed this winter. Winter conditions in the southern regions of Europe will be bleak, with usual temperatures dropping significantly. A good time to visit relatives in North America or the Caribbean Islands.
An obvious political move within the EU is coming. Far too many problems have arisen, leaving little time to legislatively carry out businesses. Authoritarianism within the EU Alliance has already appeared, and this influence will move to the very heart of the alliance in Brussels. Whether right – left wing, the EU will face a time where democratic ideals will face off against more assertive authoritarian movements and beliefs. Depending upon how difficult the EU’s suffering will be this winter, the authoritarian wing of the EU’s Legislator may make known its significant presence. Wish for an end to the wasteful Russo-Ukrainian conflict. It is the root block that can bring fascism back into vogue.
