Active COVID-19 cases are on their way back up.

After a promising eight-day stretch that saw active case numbers decline from 1,411 on July 28 to 1,113 on August 5, it appears that Alberta may be seeing the start of another rise.

Active case numbers jumped up to 1,125 over the past 24 hours, according to the Province of Alberta, an increase of just 12 but a definitely halt to the progress the province had been making throughout the start of August.

The majority of new active cases were seen in the Central Zone, which saw a one-day increase of 38. Calgary’s own numbers dropped by 24, while Edmonton’s rose by four.

Both large cities had implemented mandatory mask bylaws at the start of the month following a rise in both new and active cases in those aged 20 to 39, most notably in the Calgary area.

August 7’s provincial report also marks Alberta surpassing 10,000 recovered cases, with a total of 10,097 over the course of the pandemic.

Of the 10,420 total detected cases, 1,125 remain active, while 208 are dead — three more than yesterday’s count.

As always, Albertans are encouraged to practice safe social distancing, wear a mask when in public, maintain proper hand hygiene, and stay home when feeling sick.
