Last minute iPhone 12 rumors

According to the latest rumors, the iPhone 12 will get a lot of small but important camera improvements.

With Apple’s fall iPhone event just a day away, you’d think we already know all there is to know about the iPhone 12 lineup. And, for the most part, we do; here are two overviews of what we expect Apple to announce tomorrow.

However, leaker Max Winebauch has shared some very detailed, last-minute info about the new iPhones, some of which we haven’t heard before.

According to Winebauch, the smallest of the new iPhones – the 5.4-inch “iPhone 12 mini” – will have a more tightly arranged TrueDepth camera system on the front, resulting in a notch that’s smaller horizontally, but slightly larger vertically.

Zoom is getting a boost; Weinbauch claims the Pro models will have 3x optical zoom and 25x to 30x digital zoom, while the non-Pro iPhone 12 models will get better zoom through software enhancements.

The new iPhones are getting batteries that are about 10% larger than in previous models, too. This should result in a one-hour battery life increase for the Pro models. The 5.4-inch iPhone 12 mini, however, will perform more poorly than the iPhone 11 when it comes to battery life, due to its smaller size.

Other tidbits from Weinbauch include support for 4K video at 120 or 240 fps, faster Face ID operation, Night mode being added to the telephoto camera and better low light performance for the ultrawide camera, and a possible macro camera mode as well as a portrait video mode on the Pro models.

Apple’s big event kicks off at 10 a.m. PT Tuesday, Oct. 13. You can tune in to watch the live stream over at Apple’s website or on YouTube.

LONDON — Nokia says it has been tapped by NASA to build the first cellular communications network on the moon.

The Finnish telecommunications equipment maker said Monday its Nokia Bell Labs’ division will build a 4G communications system to be deployed on a lunar lander to the Moon’s surface in late 2022.

NASA is awarding $370 million to 14 companies including to provide technology for the Artemis moon-landing program. The program’s aim is establish a long-term human presence on the moon as a warm-up for missions to Mars.

Nokia released more details of its involvement after an announcement last week by NASA, which said it was giving the company’s U.S unit $14.1 million for the network. The U.S. space agency is also funding other innovations in cryogenic fluid management, lunar surface innovation, and descent and landing capability.

Nokia’s network will provide critical communications capabilities for tasks astronauts will need to carry out like remote control of lunar rovers, real-time navigation and high-definition video streaming, the company said.

The equipment includes base station, antennas and software and is designed to withstand harsh launches and lunar landings and extreme conditions in space.

Nokia is partnering with U.S. company Intuitive Machines, which NASA chose to build a small “hopper lander” that can access lunar craters and carry out high-resolution surveys of the lunar surface over a short distance.

“Reliable, resilient and high-capacity communications networks will be key to supporting sustainable human presence on the lunar surface,” Nokia’s chief technology officer, Marcus Weldon, said.

Got any signal up here? Nokia to build mobile network on moon

Published

 on

Finland’s Nokia has been selected by NASA to build the first cellular network on the moon, the company said on Monday.

The lunar network will be part of the U.S. space agency’s efforts to return humans to the moon by 2024 and build long-term settlements there under its Artemis program.

Nokia said the first wireless broadband communications system in space would be built on the lunar surface in late 2022, before humans make it back there.

The Finnish company will partner with Texas-based private spacecraft design firm Intuitive Machines to deliver the network equipment to the moon on their lunar lander.

After delivery, the network will configure itself and establish the first LTE (Long-Term Evolution) communications system on the moon, Nokia said.

“The network will provide critical communication capabilities for many different data-transmission applications, including vital command and control functions, remote control of lunar rovers, real-time navigation and streaming of high definition video,” Nokia said.
