TORONTO – Owen Power scored in overtime Thursday night as the Buffalo Sabres rallied from a two-goal deficit to beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-4 at Scotiabank Arena.
Power ended it 3:14 into the extra period, NHL.com reported. Buffalo had trailed 4-2 before getting goals from Dennis Gilbert and Mattias Samuelsson in the third period to force overtime.
Jack Quinn had two goals and two assists for the Sabres, who improved to 4-3-1. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made 26 saves.
Kirill Marchenko scored three times for Toronto, the fifth hat trick of his NHL career and his first as a Maple Leaf. It came in his 300th NHL game. Auston Matthews also scored, extending his goal streak to three games and his point streak to six.
Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 29 shots for the Leafs, who fell to 3-3-2. John Tavares had two assists but left the game in the third period after a collision with Buffalo’s Josh Norris. He skated to the dressing room under his own power, NHL.com reported, and there was no immediate word on his condition.
Matthews opened the scoring in the first period and Marchenko added a power-play goal later in the period to put Toronto ahead 2-1. Quinn tied the game twice for Buffalo, once in each of the first two periods. Marchenko then scored twice in the second period to make it 4-2 before the Sabres mounted their comeback.
Marchenko, acquired from the Columbus Blue Jackets in a late-September trade that sent Matthew Knies the other way, has three goals in the loss. The Leafs also fell 5-4 to the Utah Mammoth earlier in the week, and the club also made a move before the game, acquiring Aatu Räty from the Vancouver Canucks.
