If you’re looking for a little bit of entertainment to help you see the new year in, you’re in luck: the internet is positively teeming with sources of distraction, among them games pitched directly at adults.
Slot Machines
Canada is a nation of recreational gamblers, and slot machines are among the most popular form of the pastime. This is especially so when we venture on to the internet! There are more variants of the classic fruit-machine formula available than you could possible sample – and you’ll find them all over at slots.io. Who knows? You might even start the New Year that little bit richer than you ended the old one.
Among Us
Among Us is a future classic, and among the surprise hits of 2020. In it, players take the role of crewmates aboard a star-ship. The objective is to work together to find a way home. You’ll fix the various problems that occur on the ship, and fight to stay alive. The only problem is that one of the players is an alien imposters intent on murdering everyone on board. At the end of every working day, you’ll vote on who you think the imposter is. It’s a game of mistrust and deception – the perfect note on which to start the new year!
Nidhogg
It’s fast-paced and frenetic, and a little different from the fighting games you might be used to. The objective is to rush to the far end of the level and be eaten by the giant Norse worm after which the game is named, (if you want to be technical, it’s Níðhöggr). Standing in the way is the other player. You’ll need to dispatch the opponent to claim the right to progress to the next screen. Simple premise; endless fun. Don’t bother with Nidhogg 2 – the first is the best.
Gang Beasts
In Gang Beasts, four colourful blobs compete to knock one another out of an arena. Everyone’s slightly gelatinous, and there’s a heavy emphasis on grappling; these two features combine to make the game outrageously good fun to play. It’s a little bit like a WWE wrestling game, in that you need to beat your opponents down a little bit before proceeding to pick them up and toss them out of the arena.
Jackbox
Jackbox isn’t so much a single game as a whole series of them, which are sold in ‘party packs’. You’ll need to pay for a game, but after you’ve done so, you can have participants compete using their mobile phones. You’ll be typing messages, drawing t-shirt designs, and answering trivia questions. Best of all, there’s enough variety on offer to please just about everyone.
Pandemic
Pandemic is a co-operative board game where players must work together to stop a deadly virus from spreading across the globe, while rushing to fast track a vaccine. It’s proven monumentally popular in its traditional cardboard format, and it’s been ported to major gaming consoles, and the app store.
Cards
You might think that it would be easy to simulate a card game using online tools – and you’d be right. Via playingcards.io, you can play everything from Backgammon to Chess to Checkers, as well as a host of a games using the 52-card deck (and a few that use other, more specialised decks). The exact position of your cards is mimicked across every connected device. You’ll need to use a separate program to actually talk to participants – with Zoom obviously being the most popular.
To see 2021 in in real style, grab your friends and connect over some late night adult games – the perfect way to spend your evening!
