It seems the COVID-19 situation is evolving every second. Here in Waterloo Region events continue to get cancelled.
During Kitchener Today on 570 NEWS, Brian Bourke was joined by the CEO of Waterloo Regional Tourism Minto Schneider, who said the coronavirus has put tourism in a difficult situation.
“We have to encourage people to follow the recommendations from public health about keeping social distance … being near other people is probably not the best thing to do.”
Schneider mentioned social distancing has put a lot of pressure onto their partners. “As things continue they are trying to determine how they will go forward and respond to recommendations whether they stay open or to keep offering things they provide.”
With events such as the Elmira Maple Syrup Festival (which draws thousands of people each year) getting cancelled, Schneider said hotels will see a decline in business. “One of their concerns is people that aren’t coming (to the region) and how they will recover.”
She added hotels are taking extra precautions for guests that still decide to stay in Waterloo Region. “They are very cautious that they keep areas clean in the rooms and also in their public areas.”
With so many regional events a ‘no-go’, Schneider said they are using a model that will illustrate the economic impact.
“We are calculating (the impact) and sharing that with the Ontario and Federal Government, so they have an idea of what kind of damage the COVID-19 is doing economically to areas across the province and country.”
