Emails lead to weapons charges
An investigation into harassing emails led to weapons charges against a Guelph male Wednesday.
On Tuesday, staff of a local law firm contacted the Guelph Police Service to report one of their lawyers receiving unwanted emails. The emails included images and videos of a male posing with various weapons.
Through subsequent investigation the identity of the male was confirmed and it was learned he is bound by a court order prohibiting him from possessing weapons.
On Wednesday, members of the Guelph Police Service General Investigations and Tactics and Rescue units executed a search warrant at a Westwood Road residence. Items seized include an Uzi-style BB gun, Glock-style BB gun, three rounds of .22-calibre ammunition and a spring-loaded knife.
A 30-year-old Guelph male is charged with possessing a weapon contrary to a prohibition order and knowledge of unauthorized possession of a weapon. He will appear in a Guelph bail court Thursday.
Female arrested for break-ins, obstruct
A Guelph female already wanted for breaking into two downtown businesses added an obstruction charge Wednesday.
Guelph Police Service officers on patrol downtown just after 7 a.m. Wednesday recognized the female, who they knew to be wanted for breaking into two businesses last week. A laptop computer, cash and cheques were among the items stolen in the break-ins, which were caught on video.
On Wednesday the female claimed she did not have identification with her and provided a false name. Investigation confirmed her true identity and she was arrested.
A 29-year-old Guelph female is charged with two counts of break and enter, theft under $5,000, breach of probation and obstruct police. She will appear in a Guelph court March 18, 2022.
Female charged with defrauding social service agency
A Guelph female was arrested Wednesday, accused of defrauding a local social services agency of more than $31,000.
The Guelph Police Service Fraud Unit was contacted earlier this month and launched an investigation. A 32-year-old Guelph female turned herself in Wednesday and was arrested for fraud over $5,000. She will appear in a Guelph court March 18, 2022.
11 collisions during Wednesday storm
The Guelph Police Service responded to 11 collisions during Wednesday’s storm, but fortunately no serious injuries were reported.
The first was reported approximately 12:40 p.m., when police were called to a business on Woodlawn Road West. A car had left the road and collided with a pole. No injuries were reported.
Another car-versus-pole collision was reported approximately 5:45 p.m. on Clair Road East. A vehicle left the road and collided with a hydro pole, which was damaged and left leaning over the road. Clair Road East was closed for a couple of hours while the pole was removed. The driver sustained a minor head injury and was transported to hospital for assessment.
With more snow in the forecast Thursday afternoon and evening, the Guelph Police Service encourages motorists to stay off the roads if possible and drive according to weather conditions if you must venture out.
