Statistics Canada is scheduled to release October’s consumer price index on Monday, Nov. 16, the first inflation reading since the Bank of Canada raised its key interest rate to 2.5 per cent, and the Canada Child Benefit pays four days later on Friday, Nov. 20.
The central bank raised its policy rate by a quarter of a percentage point on Oct. 28, from 2.25 per cent, its first increase since 2023. We reported on the rate hike that day. The bank’s upcoming events page lists the next rate announcement for Dec. 9. Another page on the bank’s site shows a different December date, so check the bank’s calendar closer to the time.
The Nov. 16 inflation report matters because the last one was already above the bank’s 2 per cent target. Statistics Canada said the consumer price index rose 3.1 per cent in September from a year earlier, and we covered the details of September’s reading and the 27.8 per cent jump in gasoline. The agency’s release calendar lists the October figures for 8:30 a.m. ET, and says dates can change.
Other Statistics Canada releases this week and next that touch household costs include building permits for September on Nov. 12 and the new housing price index for October on Nov. 18. The agency also lists Employment Insurance statistics for September on Nov. 18. Last week’s labour force survey put the jobless rate at 6.7 per cent, which we reported in our jobs story.
On the benefit side, the Canada Revenue Agency’s payment calendar lists the Ontario trillium benefit on Tuesday, Nov. 10 and the Canada Child Benefit on Nov. 20. The Newfoundland and Labrador disability benefit pays on Nov. 25 and the Alberta child and family benefit on Nov. 27.
The Canada Disability Benefit pays on Thursday, Nov. 19, and Canada Pension Plan and Old Age Security payments follow on Nov. 26, according to the federal government’s benefits calendar. Our November benefit payment dates guide has every date in one place, and our report on the Canada Disability Benefit covers the monthly amounts.
Ottawa tabled its budget on Nov. 5. Our Budget 2026 explainer sets out what it means for household finances.
The CRA advises waiting five working days after a Canada Child Benefit or Alberta child and family benefit date before contacting it about a missing payment. Anyone with questions about their own payments or mortgage should check the official sources linked above or speak to their lender.
Money Week Canada returns next Monday. This edition does not include savings account or GIC rates, because we publish only rates we can link to the institution’s own page.
