You Can See Everything, the nearly three-hour Elizabeth Holmes documentary from Vancouver-born comedian Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim, finished No. 1 at the North American box office over the Halloween weekend with $10.6 million, narrowly ahead of DC’s Clayface.
Clayface took $10.4 million in its second weekend, down 57 per cent from its opening, according to The Numbers. The film, about the convicted Theranos founder, was ranked second a week earlier.
The documentary has now earned more than $63.8 million in 17 days, per the same chart data. Our report on its Oct. 16 to 18 opening had it at about $15 million, behind Street Fighter. By the end of its second weekend it had topped $45 million.
Rotten Tomatoes’ weekend box office column, written by Erik Childress and using Box Office Mojo’s chart, said A24 added 588 theatres to the film’s run and that it is now in more than 3,000 locations. Childress called it the fourth documentary ever to play in that many theatres.
“It is the first non-concert-related documentary to top the box office since Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11 did on its opening weekend back in June 2004,” Childress wrote.
Deadline’s headline on its weekend report put the film at $11.4 million, higher than the $10.6 million in the chart data, which suggests an earlier estimate. The ranking was the same in both: the documentary first, Clayface second.
Clayface has earned $44 million domestically in 10 days and $83 million worldwide, Rotten Tomatoes reported. Childress projected a domestic finish in the $60-million to $70-million range for the film.
Laika’s Wildwood was third with $7.5 million and $25.9 million in total, followed by Wicker with $4.1 million. Street Fighter took $3.2 million for a domestic total of about $53 million. Resident Evil, now in its seventh week, reached $157.4 million.
The Numbers counted $55.97 million in total business across 33 reporting films for the weekend, a modest figure for the holiday frame.
Fielder, best known for Nathan for You and The Rehearsal, grew up in Vancouver, which gives the weekend a Canadian note. Canadian box office figures for the film were not available when this story was published.
Rotten Tomatoes asked whether the film can reach $100 million. It noted that October releases that stood at $60 million to $70 million after 17 days with a third weekend above $10 million, including Argo, The Ring and Captain Phillips, all finished above $80 million, and that The Social Network came up just short at $96.9 million. The next weekend’s chart will show how quickly the documentary and Clayface are slowing.
