Alex Newhook has agreed to a four-year contract extension with the Montreal Canadiens worth an average of $5.55 million per season, the team announced on its official website Sept. 15. The deal runs from the 2027-28 season through 2030-31, keeping the 25-year-old forward in Montreal through the prime years of his career.
The St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador native was originally selected 16th overall by the Colorado Avalanche at the 2019 NHL Draft and won a Stanley Cup with Colorado in 2022, before the Canadiens acquired him ahead of the 2023-24 season in exchange for two draft picks, according to Canadiens.com. Since arriving in Montreal, he has posted 151 career points, 70 goals and 81 assists, in 338 regular-season NHL games.
Newhook is coming off a strong finish to the 2025-26 season, recording 13 goals and 12 assists in 42 regular-season games before elevating his play in the postseason. He led the Canadiens with seven goals and 10 points in 19 playoff games, and scored the series-clinching, game-winning goals in Game 7 victories over the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Buffalo Sabres, according to Habs Eyes on the Prize.
General manager Kent Hughes signed off on the extension as part of a broader push to lock up Montreal’s young core. Newhook is the third Canadiens player to be signed for the upcoming stretch, joining rookie forward Ivan Demidov and goaltender Jakub Dobeš, both of whom also inked extensions this offseason. The new contract keeps Newhook in a middle-six role and takes effect once his current bridge deal, carrying a $2.9 million cap hit, expires after the 2026-27 season.
