Orchard Beach residents issue plea to media to respect privacy – TheChronicleHerald.ca

Residents in of Orchard Beach in Portipique where last week’s tragedy unfolded are requesting privacy as they deal with the grief of losing loved ones.

“I have been asked again, today, by the President of the Orchard Beach Land Owners Association to request that the media please respect their privacy at this time,” said Tom Taggart, District 10 councillor for the Municipality of Colchester, in a news release issued Sunday.

Taggart said the residents “understand and respect” the media’s role in reporting on the tragedy wrought by the shooter who took 23 human lives and wounded three others but are requesting that their privacy also be respected.

“They have advised that should they wish to speak with media, they will reach out, whether directly or by statement,” he said.

“Secondly, this is to advise media that this small community and the road leading into it are privately owned. When RCMP release the crime scene, a sign will be placed at the entrance advising that it is private property and trespassers will be prosecuted.”

At that point, private security will be in place to enforce the residents’ privacy.

“The community wishes to also advise that, enough cannot be said as to the outpouring of support they have received from their larger community. However, security will turn away anyone who has not been specifically invited, as the residents attempt to return to some type of normality in their life,” Taggart said, adding the event has been “very traumatic” for those involved.

“We appreciate the condolences and the love that has been expressed to us from all across the country. However, residents have asked the municipality to convey this request to the media on their behalf. Please leave the community to grieve. The presence of cameras and contacting community members for comment is just too much to bear at this time.”

Watch what you say about COVID-19 on social media, Quebec College of Physicians warns its members – CTV News Montreal

MONTREAL —
Quebec’s College of Physicians has issued a warning to the province’s doctors who talk about COVID-19 on social media: denying the importance of the virus, or encouraging citizens to deconfine themselves quickly, not only goes against directives of public health, but also of their code of ethics.

The College is urging them to be careful when writing comments about COVID-19 on Twitter or Facebook.

The reminder was issued Wednesday via a press release.

The College said it was informed by its investigations division that doctors were using social media to voice their opinions about the COVID-19 pandemic.

It reminded doctors that their ethical obligations always hold “even when they express themselves from a personal point of view” on social media.

In no way should such communications on these platforms be used to express opinions or disseminate messages that are contrary to scientific standards, the College said.
