As the conversation around restarting the economy continues, Windsor’s mayor said the return of transit should work in tandem with businesses coming back online.
Mayor Drew Dilkens addressed the situation at a meeting of the Windsor-Essex County COVID-19 economic task force last Friday.
The order to shut down the bus service expires on Thursday.
“We are looking to have meetings with the leadership at … the local transit union, working through various issues … making sure the proper protocol’s in place, and we hope to be able to talk to you more about where we’re going at the expiry of the order, in fairly short order,” he said.
Dilkens is set to make an announcement Monday morning at 11 a.m. at city hall.
The mayor said when transit does come back, the health and safety of passengers and drivers will be key.
On Friday, the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit released recommendations for a safe transit system, which included a list for both the transit system to stay safe, as well as for its riders.
“Maintaining a safe transit system is a priority at all times,” a memo released by WECHU read.
“As we continue to learn from the COVID-19 pandemic, it is important to ensure all measures are in place to protect our transit employees and the public who rely on public transit.”
Busses were pulled off the road by the City of Windsor on March 29.
