The three-team blockbuster deal that would send star outfielder Mookie Betts and left-handed starter David Price to the Los Angeles Dodgers is temporarily on hold, according to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal.
Rosenthal reports that the Boston Red Sox, who are dealing away Betts and Price, could ask for more pieces than what was currently reported.
As of Tuesday night, the trade would send Price and Betts to the Dodgers, while the Red Sox would get Minnesota Twins pitching prospect Brusdar Graterol and Dodgers outfielder Alex Verdugo. The Twins would receive Dodgers pitcher Kenta Maeda in the deal.
But the Red Sox have expressed concerns after evaluating Graterol’s physical exams, and, according to Rosenthal, now view him as a potential reliever rather than a starter.
Graterol, 21, missed time with a shoulder injury last season, logging 70.2 innings in three levels, including 9.2 major-league frames.
Rosenthal says that the Red Sox haven’t moved on from Graterol, and people involved in the trade are confident the trade will materialize, but the team would likely ask for an additional player or cash considerations coming from either the Dodgers or Twins.
Verdugo, the other prospect likely on the move to Boston, also missed time last year with back problems, but has been cleared by physicians.
