The Golden State Warriors have agreed to trade D’Angelo Russell to the Minnesota Timberwolves for Andrew Wiggins and draft picks, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.
In addition to Wiggins, the Warriors will reportedly receive a 2021 protected first-round pick and a 2022 second-round pick. The 2021 pick is protected if it falls within the top-three selections, and becomes unprotected in 2022, according to Wojnarowski.
The Warriors will also send Jacob Evans and Omari Spellman to the Timberwolves to make the salaries involved match.
Wiggins is averaging a career-high 22.4 points per game on 44.4 per cent shooting from the floor, to go along with 5.2 rebounds and 3.7 assists — both career highs as well.
Despite the 24-year-old’s impressive overall campaign, the Timberwolves are mired in another season in which they appear destined to miss the playoffs, currently owning a 15-35 record — the second-worst in the Western Conference.
Minnesota has pursued Russell, a longtime friend of their star big man Karl-Anthony Towns, since the off-season.
Russell joined the Warriors last summer in a sign-and-trade with the Brooklyn Nets that completed the Kevin Durant blockbuster.
So far this year, the 23-year-old has averaged a career-high 23.6 points per game for the shorthanded Warriors, as well as 6.2 assists.
