San Jose Sharks defenceman Erik Karlsson will be out the remainder of the season with a broken left thumb, the team announced on Saturday.
The injury, which Karlsson suffered on Friday night in San Jose’s 3-2 road win over the Winnipeg Jets, will require surgery. He’s expected to be fully recovered in time for the team’s 2020 training camp.
In a corresponding move, the Sharks recalled blueliner Jake Middleton from the AHL’s San Jose Barracuda.
Karlsson, 29, has six goals and 40 points while averaging 24:31 ice time per game this season for the Sharks (25-28-4), who currently sit sixth in the Pacific Division and 10 points back of the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference.
