The Vancouver Canucks’ 2023 first-round pick had a big performance Friday for Sweden at the World Juniors.

That’s because one of the prize possessions in the Canucks’ prospect cupboard, Tom Willander, put in a massive game for his country, leading Sweden to a 2-0 win over Canada in Gothenburg.
Willander was grinning post game, telling the Canadian Press in response to a question about facing his college teammate: “I think I won that one. … I think the scoreboard speaks for itself.”
Willander played 17:59 for Sweden and was a strong presence every time he was on the ice. He played a key role in killing off two Canadian power plays in the third period.
He consistently made it difficult for Canada to cycle the puck, using his stick well to get into the spaces the Canadians wanted to carry the puck through.
His countryman and fellow Canucks defence prospect Elias Pettersson led Sweden with 20:41 in ice time.
Pettersson has been a defensive force for Sweden at this tournament, a performance that will surely please Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin, who is in attendance at the tournament. Pettersson was drafted in 2022 for his gritty play and smart hockey sense, talents he’s put on display so far this week.
