Porsche has announced the arrival of the GTS models to its 911 range of sports cars. The five new enthusiast-tuned vehicles slot into the middle — the sweet spot — of the existing 911 lineup above the standard Carrera and Carrera S models, but below the powerful Turbo and track-ready GT3 models.
“Twelve years ago, the very first GTS version of the 911 was introduced – featuring a series of very targeted modifications that, when brought together combined to make a difference – as a more focused, more dynamic and faster 911 that retained the subtly and usability of the car on which it was based,” says Porsche in a press release. “Following a familiar theme, a new generation of the popular sports car model is being launched. More powerful and visually distinctive, and with better driving dynamics than ever, the six-cylinder boxer engine at the heart of the 911 GTS delivers 473 hp, which is 30 hp more than the current 911 Carrera S and 23 hp over the previous 911 GTS. Torque rises to 420 lb-ft.”

The added power from the twin-turbocharged, 3.0-liter, flat-6 drops the 0-60 mph sprint down to a Porsche-quoted 3.1 seconds, which is three tenths faster than its predecessors (the automaker’s numbers are typically quite conservative, so expect magazine times in the high 2-second range for the new models).
As expected, Porsche is offering its GTS models with a choice between its 8-speed dual-clutch “PDK” and a traditional 7-speed manual gearbox. The 911 GTS models are offered with rear- or all-wheel drive and a choice between Coupe, Targa, and Cabriolet body styles — comprehensive combinations to fit nearly everyone’s preferences.
In addition to the increased power, Porsche offers GTS Coupe and Cabriolet models with the upgraded Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) Sport with 10mm lower ride height as standard fitment (Targa models retain standard PASM suspension). Center-lock wheels are standard, as is the Sport Exhaust system. The brakes are also upgraded to mirror those on the 911 Turbo model (Porsche’s PCCB carbon-ceramic brakes are optional).

For the first time, Porsche will offer an optional Lightweight package on the 911 Carrera GTS Coupe models. “Up to 55 lbs. can be saved by the lighter carbon fiber full bucket seats, lightweight glass for the side and rear windows, and the use of a lightweight battery. The rear seats are also removed,” says Porsche
Visually, the GTS models are set apart by enhancements found in the SportDesign package. According to Porsche, this includes “distinctive trim for the front, rear and the side sills. The headlight trims and daytime running light surrounds are darkened, and the car is fitted with standard LED headlights with Porsche Dynamic Light System Plus (PDLS Plus). The rear lights are also darkened. Satin Black accents characterize the model designation, PORSCHE lettering and charge-air grille slats above the engine.”
The passenger compartment features Race-Tex upholstery, a GT Sport steering wheel, Sport Chrono package, Porsche Track Precision app, and four-way Sport Seats Plus as standard fitment. There is also reduced interior insulation to save weight and enhance visceral engagement with the new GTS models.
Porsche says first deliveries for the US are expected in early 2022 with a starting MSRP of $136,700.
