Canada’s Leylah Fernandez upsets Mirra Andreeva at National Bank Open

Leylah Fernandez finally has some momentum.

The Canadian beat No. 5 seed Mirra Andreeva of Russia 6-1, 6-4 in the third round of the National Bank Open presented by Rogers on Friday in Toronto.

Fernandez was 14-20 in 2026 entering the match, and 0-4 against top-10 opponents for the year.

But the No. 30 seed turned things around against Andreeva, this year’s French Open champion.

Fernandez won nine games in a row at one point. She led 6-1, 5-1 before the 19-year-old Andreeva mounted a comeback bid that ultimately fell short.

Fernandez, the 2021 US Open runner-up, is the lone Canadian left in either the women’s or men’s singles draws at the NBO.

She’ll next face the winner of a match between No. 11 Naomi Osaka of Japan and No. 20 Elise Mertens of Belgium.
