Artur scored the only goal in the second half as São Paulo beat Vasco da Gama 1-0 at the MorumBIS on Saturday in the 31st round of Brazil’s Série A, Brazilian outlets reported.
The forward finished a pass from Pedro Lima in the 68th minute, the 22nd minute of the second half, according to Super Rádio Tupi and a OneFootball match report published by Yahoo Sports. OneFootball reported that the goal ended a run of 13 games in which São Paulo had failed to score, and that Artur later hit the post.
The match drew more than 100 searches in Canada on Saturday night, according to Google Trends. The two clubs are among the most decorated in Brazil’s Série A, known as the Brasileirão.
The win lifted São Paulo to 42 points and eighth place, Tupi reported. OneFootball said the result left São Paulo 10 points clear of 17th place, the first spot in the relegation zone. Vasco stayed 15th with 35 points and has a game in hand, but lost its second straight league match and missed a chance to pull further away from the bottom four, according to Tupi.
Vasco started the stronger side, with Andrés Gómez causing problems for defender Toloi, OneFootball reported, but neither team managed a shot on target before halftime. São Paulo coach Dorival brought on veteran Lucas Moura at the start of the second half, and the home side took control after the goal. Vasco’s best late chance came in the fourth minute of stoppage time, the report said. A video review also overturned an incident that would otherwise have led to a red card.
The crowd at the MorumBIS was 31,501, according to OneFootball.
Vasco, coached by Pedro Emanuel, now turns to the Copa Sudamericana. It hosts Argentina’s Boca Juniors at the Maracanã on Tuesday in the second leg of the semifinal after winning the first leg 1-0 in Argentina, Tupi and OneFootball reported. Vasco then hosts Corinthians on Oct. 24, while São Paulo visits Mirassol the same day.
