Ottawa Senators captain Thomas Chabot left Saturday’s game in Philadelphia with an undisclosed injury and did not return, as the Flyers beat the Senators 3-1 for their first win of the season.
Chabot was missing from the Ottawa bench during the second period, came back briefly and did not play in the third before he was ruled out, Postmedia’s Bruce Garrioch reported, according to RotoWire and CBS Sports. The Senators are expected to give an update on his status before a home back-to-back against the Florida Panthers on Wednesday and the San Jose Sharks on Thursday, RotoWire said. The NHL’s official game summary lists Chabot at 12 minutes 3 seconds of ice time.
The 29-year-old defenceman was named the Senators’ 11th captain this fall after Brady Tkachuk was traded to the Florida Panthers in June, The Canadian Press reported. He is signed through the 2027-28 season with a salary cap hit of US$8 million. Chabot also missed time last spring after breaking his right forearm on a March 23 cross-check, then returned weeks ahead of schedule, ESPN and NHL.com reported at the time.
His name drew more than 200 searches in Canada on Saturday night, according to Google Trends.
On the ice, Drake Batherson opened the scoring for Ottawa at 5:55 of the second period, his fourth goal of the season, with assists from Claude Giroux and Tim Stützle, according to the NHL game summary.
Philadelphia answered with two goals from its young forwards. Porter Martone tied it 1-1 at 9:03 of the second on a feed from Matvei Michkov, and Michkov put the Flyers ahead on a power play at 18:33 when a Martone shot deflected off goaltender Linus Ullmark’s pads, Philly Hockey Now reported. Trevor Zegras sealed it with an empty-net goal with 14 seconds left.
Dan Vladar made 25 saves for the Flyers, while Ullmark stopped 25 of 27 shots for Ottawa, the NHL summary shows. Philadelphia outshot the Senators 28-26 and went one for three on the power play, while Ottawa was held scoreless on two chances.
The win was Philadelphia’s first after a 0-6-3 start, and Philly Hockey Now noted the Flyers entered the third period with only their third lead after two periods this season. The Senators fell to 6-3-0, two nights after Ullmark stopped 20 shots in a shootout win over the Islanders. Earlier in the week, the Blues routed the Senators 7-2.
Chabot and Stützle had pledged this week to give to the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario for every Senators win, as we reported Friday.
The Flyers host the Colorado Avalanche on Monday.
