A busy stretch of the Stanley Park seawall in Vancouver will close from Monday, Oct. 26, to Saturday, Nov. 14, while crews remove the gates that force cyclists to dismount and carry out yearly maintenance.
The closure runs between Third Beach and Lumberman’s Arch, with a detour through Stanley Park between Lumberman’s Arch and Ferguson Point, Daily Hive and Vancouver Is Awesome reported, citing the Vancouver Park Board.
“We’re removing speed gates, also known as maze gates, near Lumberman’s Arch, Prospect Point, and Third Beach,” the park board said online. “This work will improve accessibility and safety for people of all ages and abilities.”
The board said it is pairing the work with annual rock scaling and seawall maintenance to cut down on disruption for visitors.
Park board commissioners voted unanimously in March 2025 to remove the three cyclist dismount gates and approved concept designs for changing the bike path at those spots. The gates sit at the Lumberman’s Arch spray park, under the Lions Gate Bridge at Prospect Point and beside the Third Beach concession stand and parking lot.
The gates make cyclists walk their bikes across busy pedestrian crossings, and on summer days they can create congestion and long lines of riders on the path, Daily Hive reported.
