SEATTLE: The Seattle Seahawks beat the Kansas City Chiefs 20-3 on Sunday night at Lumen Field, handing Kansas City its first loss of the season, according to ESPN.
Seattle improved to 4-3, including 3-1 at home. The Chiefs fell to 5-1 after being held to roughly 210 yards and just 50 yards on the ground.
Receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba had nine catches for 150 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Sam Darnold threw for 257 yards and a score, with one interception, and Emanuel Wilson ran 24 times for 100 yards and a touchdown.
Seattle led 10-0 at halftime. Jason Myers kicked a 25-yard field goal in the second quarter, and after a Ty Okada interception, Darnold scrambled for seven yards and then hit Smith-Njigba on a 28-yard touchdown pass with 1:44 left in the half. Darnold was later intercepted in the end zone as time expired, and Harrison Butker’s 58-yard attempt for Kansas City fell short.
Myers added a 35-yard field goal in the third quarter to make it 13-0. Butker answered with a 50-yard field goal, the only points the Chiefs scored. Butker missed a 45-yard attempt wide right in the fourth quarter, and Wilson sealed the game with a 21-yard touchdown run with 3:47 left.
Patrick Mahomes finished with 165 passing yards and an interception, and he lost a fumble on third down in Seattle territory, ESPN reported. Running back Kenneth Walker III, who was back in Seattle with the Chiefs, had 14 carries for 36 yards. Travis Kelce caught four passes to reach 1,104 career receptions, which moved him to fifth in NFL history.
“Listen, all three phases we struggled, so we’ve got to do better, and that’s my responsibility,” Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said.
Seattle head coach Mike Macdonald said the result was a reminder of what his team can do. “I think this game reminds the guys what we’re capable of,” he said.
The win snapped a two-game skid for the Seahawks, who have leaned on their defence all season. Our earlier coverage of Seattle’s defence and Darnold’s injury followed the team’s early-season questions at quarterback.
The game drew heavy search interest in Canada on Sunday night as football fans followed Kansas City’s bid to stay unbeaten.
