Cavalry FC beat Vancouver FC 1-0 to win CPL Shield

Ali Musse scored in the 29th minute as Cavalry FC beat Vancouver FC 1-0 at ATCO Field on Sunday and won the Canadian Premier League Shield on the final day of the regular season.

Cavalry entered the day level with Forge FC on 57 points and held the tiebreaker, according to the Calgary Citizen. The win left Cavalry two points clear of Forge, which was held to a 1-1 draw by Pacific FC in Victoria. It is Cavalry’s third Shield, according to CBC and Canadian Soccer Daily.

Tristan Borges scored in the 12th minute for Forge, but the Hamilton side gave up an equalizer in the 72nd minute to Pacific’s Ronan Kratt, The Canadian Press reported.

Elsewhere on the final day, FC Supra du Québec took the fourth and final playoff spot from Vancouver FC. Supra beat the Halifax Wanderers 4-3 in Halifax, with Ibrahim Condé scoring twice. Vancouver entered the day two points ahead of Supra in fourth place but lost in Calgary, and missed the playoffs.

Inter Toronto beat Atlético Ottawa 2-1 at York Lions Stadium in the only match without playoff consequences, according to Canadian Soccer Daily. Ottawa had already secured third place.

The semifinals will be played over two legs. Cavalry will face FC Supra du Québec, and Forge will take on Atlético Ottawa, The Canadian Press reported. The CPL fixtures list shows the first Supra-Cavalry match on Nov. 1 and the return on Nov. 7.

Cavalry were beaten by the Vancouver Whitecaps in the Canadian Championship quarterfinal in July, and we reported on that elimination at the time. Forge, which finished second in the league, won the Canadian Championship earlier this month, and our report on that final is here.
