Will Osula and Harvey Barnes scored after the break as Newcastle United beat Crystal Palace 2-0 at Selhurst Park on Sunday, Oct. 25, lifting the visitors to seventh in the Premier League.
Osula put Newcastle ahead just over a minute after the restart, meeting Jacob Murphy’s cross from the right. It was his first start since the opening day of the season, according to the club’s match report. Barnes doubled the lead around the 57th minute, finishing a pass from Amar Dedić that came via Nico González. It was Barnes’ fourth goal of the season. Football Web Pages lists the goals in the 47th and 58th minutes.
Palace had the best early chance, but Newcastle goalkeeper Lukáš Horníček smothered Jean-Philippe Mateta’s close-range effort. Daichi Kamada went down under a challenge from Fabian Schär in the box, but referee Paul Tierney waved away appeals for a penalty.
Palace thought they had pulled level when Joe Willock scored after a through ball from Joelinton, but VAR ruled him fractionally offside. Horníček also made later saves from Adam Wharton and substitute Darío Osorio to protect the clean sheet.
Newcastle had good news on the injury front. Jacob Ramsey and Anthony Elanga, both described by the club as fit again, came on as late substitutes, and no new injuries were reported. Attendance was 25,018.
Palace were playing their first Premier League match since a 2-2 draw at Besiktas in the Europa League on Oct. 22, covered in our report on Palace’s draw in Istanbul.
The weekend’s other Premier League results included Manchester United’s 3-0 home loss to Bournemouth, Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Brighton, a 1-1 draw between Hull City and Brentford and a 0-0 draw between Sunderland and Leeds United, according to Football Web Pages.
