In response to an unparalleled judgment by the Supreme Court of India which called for the detention of human rights defenders, eminent Canadians like Naomi Klein, Peter Leuprecht, and M.G. Vassanji, write with concern and urgency to the President of India and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India. In the letters they state that “the circumstances surrounding” the “recent arrest and detention of Ms. Teesta Setalvad and Mr. R.B. Sreekumar” would “indicate that due legal process and political activism have been troublingly conflated” and “threaten the international reputation of India, as an upholder of the rule of law and a secular, democratic state”. They call on the President and the Chief Justice to remedy the situation, drop all charges against them and release them from custody immediately.Press conference with some of the signatories and legal expertsThursday 21st July on zoom11:00am (EDT)
