Jake Allen turned in another strong performance in goal, but Calgary goaltender Jacob Markstrom was even better as he made 37 saves to lead the Flames to a 2-0 win over the Canadiens on Saturday at the Bell Centre.
It was the first regulation loss for the Canadiens, who have a 5-1-2 record.
Allen, who won his first two starts as Carey Price’s backup, made 32 saves. He gave up a power-play goal to Johnny Gaudreau and he was on the bench when Mikael Backlund scored into an empty net.
It was Markstrom’s second win in seven appearances against the Canadiens. His only other win over Montreal was in 2011 when he was a rookie with the Florida Panthers. He received some help from his teammates, who blocked 22 shots.
The Canadiens have five shorthanded goals this season, but they still have trouble recognizing bad things can happen when you take penalties, especially when you’re facing a team that had scored power-play goals in each of its first six games.
