Kai Havertz scored in the 16th minute and Arsenal held on to beat Liverpool 1-0 at Anfield in the Premier League on Sunday.
The German forward struck early for the visitors, and Arsenal protected that lead through a second half in which Liverpool made five substitutions in search of an equalizer. None of them changed the result.
The match was held up in the third minute while Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes received treatment for an injury. Play resumed shortly afterward, and Arsenal took the lead less than 13 minutes later. Havertz was replaced by Viktor Gyokeres in the 84th minute.
The game was a physical one. Yellow cards went to players on both sides, among them Liverpool’s Bradley Barcola and Milos Kerkez and Arsenal’s Noni Madueke, as Liverpool pressed for a way back into the match without finding a goal. Kerkez needed treatment during the second half and was replaced by Kostas Tsimikas.
Arsenal arrived at Anfield after a penalty shootout loss to Fleetwood on Oct. 28, which we reported, so the response in the league was notable. Liverpool had beaten Chelsea 6-5 on penalties the same night.
Elsewhere in Europe on the weekend, Juventus beat Napoli 2-0 in Serie A, and Dortmund drew 2-2 with Bayern Munich on Saturday on a late goal from Silva.
