NIPAWIN — Business leaders, community members and officials gathered to celebrate excellence and community impact at the 2025 ABEX Awards, hosted by the Nipawin & District Chamber of Commerce on March 6.
The evening recognized local businesses for their contributions across several sectors, while also marking a leadership transition within the chamber.
Incoming Nipawin Chamber of Commerce president Sean Graham told attendees he was “honoured” to take on the role, emphasizing the importance of connection within the business community.
“Tonight is about the ABEX Awards. In business, we spend so much time looking ahead that we often forget to stop and say, ‘Look at what we built,’” Graham said.
He added the awards represent more than recognition.
“ABEX isn’t just about a trophy on a shelf. It’s a testament to resilience and the role each business plays in strengthening our region.”
Graham said his priority as president will be fostering stronger connections between businesses and opportunities.
The event also featured remarks from representatives of Member of Parliament Randy Hoback, MLA Terri Bromm and Nipawin Mayor Marlon Zacharias.
Four businesses were recognized for excellence in their respective categories:
Service Award: Samana’s Pizza & Grill
Samana’s Pizza & Grill, a second-generation family business operated by Taso Gliatis and his wife, Kerri, traces its roots back to 1981 when his father founded the restaurant under a different name. Over more than four decades, the business has built a reputation for community service, fundraising and customer-first values across Nipawin and northeast Saskatchewan. After closing its previous location in 2024, the family reopened as Samana’s Pizza & Grill, a name inspired by their children and a continued commitment to family and community.
Retail Award: Save-U IGA
Save-U IGA, a family-owned business since 1976, has been a cornerstone of downtown Nipawin, with Jarvis operating the store since 1993 and continuing its tradition of community-focused service. The store offers a full range of grocery departments, featuring in-house prepared products and locally sourced goods, while long-serving staff help create a welcoming and familiar shopping experience. Strong community support remains central to its mission, with ongoing sponsorship of local events and initiatives reflecting its commitment to giving back.
Heritage Award: Market Tire Nipawin
Market Tire Nipawin, originally founded as Fairburn Tire, is marking 60 years of service in the community, building a reputation as a trusted provider of tire and automotive services. Known for its knowledgeable staff and customer-focused approach, the business has developed strong, lasting relationships with residents and local businesses. Its long-standing commitment to quality service and community connection has made it a respected and reliable presence in Nipawin.
Agriculture Award: Kevin’s Custom Ag
Kevin’s Custom Ag, a locally owned family business, has been serving Nipawin and the surrounding area since 1992, growing from its early roots in custom fertilizer application into a diversified agricultural service provider. Despite a devastating fire in 2006, the company rebuilt and expanded, offering manufacturing, retail and specialized products and services to customers across Saskatchewan. With a continued focus on customer service and innovation, the business remains committed to supporting producers and the regional economy.
Graham congratulated both winners and finalists, noting the strength of the local business community.
“Your hard work and dedication are what make Nipawin such a powerhouse in this province,” he said.
The awards also highlighted the broader impact of local businesses, from customer service and innovation to long-standing community involvement.
“Tonight showed us what excellence looks like, but the work of building this community happens every day.”
Sean Graham presented Yuriy Danyliuk with the past president plaque.
