FREDERICTON – Prince Edward Island Premier Dennis King is hoping cooler heads prevail and trade continues to flow uninterrupted across the United States-Canada border.
He has been leading a 21-member team of cabinet ministers and industry representatives on a bus trip through three northeastern states, meeting with industry leaders and elected officials to highlight the importance of the province’s potato and seafood exports.
United States president-elect Donald Trump has threatened to impose a 25 per cent tariff on Canadian goods on his first day in office on Jan. 20 unless Canada tightens border security.
Trump says the United States does not need anything from Canada and has spoken about using “economic force” to make the country the 51st state.
King says Canadian products help create jobs and economic activity in the United States, and he wants to highlight that aspect through the trip that began Sunday.
Prince Edward Island exports about $1.8 billion worth of goods to the United States, making up about 25 per cent of the province’s gross domestic product.
