“I’ve found my family,” Contreras said, per Cotillo.
Contreras has enjoyed a career year in Boston after an off-season trade sent him to the Red Sox from the St. Louis Cardinals.
The 11-year MLB veteran slugged 20 homers in the first half — well on pace to top his career-high of 24 — and owns a .285 average, .542 slugging percentage and .921 OPS, all of which would stand as the best marks of his career.
In addition to his gaudy offensive numbers, Contreras earned a spot at the 2026 MLB All-Star Game and participated in Monday’s Home Run Derby.
Now a four-time all-star, it’s perhaps not a major surprise that Contreras would like to keep manning first base at Fenway Park, as he has posted a .311/.407/.576 slash line in 43 games at home this season.
Contreras is in the fourth year of a five-year deal he signed before the 2023 season, with a club option for 2028.
While Contreras has been a steady presence in Boston’s lineup this season, the Red Sox have been riding the roller-coaster in 2026. They went from firing longtime manager Alex Cora in April to sinking to the bottom of the American League standings before riding a nine-game winning streak into the all-star break.
The late first-half surge saw Boston move to just 0.5 games back of the final wild-card spot in the AL.
