Global Solidarity Actions In Response To Unprecedented Political Violence, Voter Disenfranchisement, Police Brutality And Intimidation In Delhi
What: Decentralized global solidarity protests denouncing political violence, police repression, and voter disenfranchisement in India.
When: Saturday, October 17 and Sunday, October 18, 2026
Where: Over twenty (20) cities across North America, Europe and Australia, including New York, London, Los Angeles, Berlin, Sydney, and Toronto [1].
People in over twenty cities across the world are gathering to denounce state-led intimidation, violence, and systematic repression of people in India who have been standing up to demand accountability for the voter disenfranchisement of more than 130 million votes across the country.
This crackdown by Prime Minister Narendra Modi follows widespread public mobilization against the removal of voters from official registries and growing calls for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to resign.
The nationwide unrest stems from investigative reports [2] detailing the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) voter eligibility process, which disenfranchised more than 130 million citizens—approximately 13% of the Indian electorate—from voter rolls across 30 states [3]. Civil society groups note that those disenfranchised include long-standing eligible voters and disproportionately belong to minority populations, especially Muslim communities.
Demonstrators are calling for an immediate review of the voter purge and the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, who led the SIR process among other demands.
According to reports from India Cable (a newsletter published by independent outlet The Wire), security forces transformed New Delhi into a heavily barricaded, militarized zone. Transit access was severely restricted, with inbound trains canceled and 57 metro stations closed overnight.
Political leaders, students, and lawyers have faced targeted harassment, detentions, and restricted movement for protesting the disenfranchisement. Journalists have also been attacked and detained for attempting to report on the repression and violence that protestors have faced.
The upcoming global solidarity actions will feature solidarity statements by concerned citizens across the world, first-hand testimonials from ground witnesses and remarks from individuals whose families are directly impacted by voter disenfranchisement.
On-site interviews with organizers and speakers will be available.
