Defence Minister David McGuinty confirmed Saturday that people were killed and injured after an explosion and a major fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in east-central Alberta, The Canadian Press reported.
Updated Oct. 17, 2026, at 8:40 p.m. MT. This is a developing story.
McGuinty, speaking to reporters in Ottawa, said he had no other details to share, including the number of casualties or what happened, according to The Canadian Press. He would not confirm how many people died, calling it a “very active and delicate situation,” CTV News reported.
Prime Minister Mark Carney said in a social media post just after 6 p.m. that a “serious incident creating a major fire occurred at CFB Wainwright,” CBC News reported. “Our thoughts are with all the brave women and men affected,” Carney wrote. “We are working closely with the Government of Alberta and local authorities.”
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said in a post on X that the province was “learning of a significant and tragic fire that is affecting many of our brave military personnel,” according to CBC.
The base is about 200 kilometres southeast of Edmonton. Fire crews were battling a blaze between the base and the nearby town of Wainwright, CP reported, as large parts of the province were hit by a windstorm with gusts of up to 100 km/h. McGuinty said he understood the town was not threatened and was helping the base with the injured and the fire, according to CP.
The Municipal District of Wainwright said the fire south of town “crossed the base fence earlier today and is being actively managed,” CBC reported. The municipality set up an emergency co-ordination centre, told people to avoid the area and keep roads clear for emergency vehicles, and asked residents not to visit the Wainwright Health Centre unless they have a critical medical need.
Acute Care Alberta said around 6 p.m. MT that Emergency Health Services was on scene “supporting care and transport related to an incident at CFB Wainwright,” according to CBC. Conservative MP Dane Lloyd said in a social media post that he had heard of “significant casualties” after an explosion and fire at the base, CBC and Global News reported.
Officials have not said what caused the explosion. A National Defence spokeswoman said the government was closely monitoring the situation and would release more information as it becomes available, according to reports. The names of those killed or hurt have not been released.
CFB Wainwright is one of the Canadian Army’s main training areas and regularly hosts large exercises with allied forces. The incident came on a day of high winds across the province, after Environment Canada issued wind warnings for southern Alberta, as we reported earlier Saturday. French-language searches for “incendie” rose in Canada Saturday evening as Quebec outlets reported the fire, according to Google Trends. The incident follows a severe national wildfire season, with wildfires burning 4.5 million hectares across Canada in 2026.
