On the evening of April 12, Christina received a message from her cousin containing a link to an article published on Proto Thema, one of the most popular news websites in Greece. She opened it, and was shocked.
The lead picture featured a group of pedestrians and cyclists on a coastal road in the Greek capital, Athens, the day before, beneath a headline that read, ‘Scenes of Overcrowding for a Second Day’.
Christina [not her real name] recognised herself in the photograph, enjoying a rare escape from home during a lockdown in place since March 12 to combat the spread of COVID-19. But something wasn’t right.
“The distance between me and everyone else in the bicycle lane as shown in the picture was in no way the actual distance that afternoon,” Christina, 32, told BIRN.
