Apple MacBook Neo: best for most students
The MacBook Neo is Apple’s lowest-priced laptop and the No. 1 seller in Amazon.ca’s laptop category when we checked. The 13-inch model with Apple’s A18 Pro chip, 8 GB of memory and 256 GB of storage was $939.99, shipped and sold by Amazon.ca, with a 4.6-star average from 1,480 ratings and more than 100 bought in the past month.

According to Apple’s spec page, it has a 13-inch, 2408 by 1506 display rated at 500 nits, weighs 1.23 kg, and is rated for up to 11 hours of wireless web use and up to 16 hours of video streaming. It has two USB-C ports, but only one runs at USB 3 speeds; the other is USB 2. The base model does not have Touch ID.
Notebookcheck’s lab review praised its fanless, silent design, sturdy aluminum body and comfortable keyboard and trackpad. It flagged the lack of a backlit keyboard as the biggest flaw, and noted the memory and storage are soldered and cannot be upgraded later.
Amazon.ca buyers most often praise its performance and value for money, and several like the colour options and build quality compared with Windows laptops at a similar price. The most common complaints concern speed in heavier tasks and battery life, where experiences vary. It suits students who write papers, research, take notes and stream. Students in engineering, architecture or video programs that need Windows-only software, or more than 8 GB of memory, should look elsewhere.

Acer Aspire Go 15: best budget Windows laptop
The Acer Aspire Go 15 is the most-reviewed Windows laptop we found sold by Amazon.ca. It was $449.99, down from a listed $548, with a 4.4-star average from 944 ratings. The listing specifies a 15.6-inch screen, an Intel Core 3 N355 processor, 8 GB of memory and 128 GB of storage, running Windows 11 Home in S mode. Full specs are on Acer Canada’s site.
S mode only runs apps from the Microsoft Store. Microsoft says you can switch out of S mode for free, but the change is one way.
Reviewers like its performance for the price, its easy setup and its screen, and several say it has handled everyday schoolwork for months. The most common complaints are speed under heavier loads, battery life, the small 128 GB of storage and durability. It is a sensible pick for high school students and anyone on a tight budget who needs Microsoft Office or Windows-only school software. Students who keep large files locally should budget for cloud storage or an external drive.

Gateway Chromebook 14: best under $300
The Gateway Chromebook 14, made by Acer, was $269.99 with a 4.2-star average from 390 ratings and more than 400 bought in the past month. Its listing specifies a 14-inch 1920 by 1080 screen, an Intel Celeron N4500 processor, 4 GB of memory, 64 GB of eMMC storage and ChromeOS.

Buyers praise its value, convenience, size and battery life, and many say it is enough for web browsing, Google Docs and online classes. The most common complaint is reliability, followed by connectivity problems. With 4 GB of memory, it is a browser machine, not a laptop for photo editing or many open tabs at once.
Before buying any Chromebook, check its date on Google’s Auto Update policy page. After that date it stops getting ChromeOS and security updates. It suits younger students, a backup laptop, or families whose school board uses Google Classroom.

ASUS Vivobook 17: best big screen
The ASUS Vivobook 17 was $1,049.00 with a 4.4-star average from 24 ratings and more than 100 bought in the past month. The model on Amazon.ca has a 17.3-inch full HD screen, an Intel Core 5 120U processor, 16 GB of memory, a 512 GB solid-state drive and a fingerprint reader, according to the listing and ASUS Canada’s spec page.
Reviewers like its speed, the large screen for reading and its weight for a 17-inch laptop. One reviewer who otherwise rated it highly said its ports are not current. With only 24 ratings, there is less customer feedback than for our other picks. It suits university students who want double the memory of the MacBook Neo and a large screen for spreadsheets and side-by-side windows. Anyone who carries a laptop to class all day may find a 17-inch machine bulky.

ASUS Zenbook A14: best premium Windows laptop
The ASUS Zenbook A14 is the splurge pick at $1,881.99, with a 4.4-star average from 20 ratings. The configuration sold by Amazon.ca has a 14-inch WUXGA OLED screen, a Qualcomm Snapdragon X processor, 32 GB of memory, a 1 TB SSD and Wi-Fi 6E, according to the listing. ASUS lists the full specs on its Canadian site.

Notebookcheck’s review of this model focused on its weight of under 1 kg and lists a 70 Wh battery. One Amazon.ca reviewer, whose household uses it for graduate school and photo editing, said it runs several photo-editing programs at once and compared it to a MacBook Air.
The complaints are serious ones: one buyer said the OLED display stopped working after two weeks and had to go back under warranty, another returned it over battery life of about four hours, and another said they received a unit that appeared used. Inspect it when it arrives and keep the box during the return window. Snapdragon laptops use Arm chips, so check that any specialized school software runs on Windows on Arm before buying.

How to choose a student laptop in Canada

Start with the program, not the price. Many college and university programs publish minimum laptop requirements, and engineering, architecture and some business programs require Windows. Check your school’s list before you buy.
Memory matters more than processor names. A Chromebook works with 4 GB for web-based schoolwork, but 8 GB is the practical floor for Windows or macOS, and 16 GB gives room for many browser tabs, Teams calls and large spreadsheets at once.
French immersion and Quebec students may want a Canadian French keyboard. Most Amazon.ca laptop listings say “English keyboard”, so read the title carefully. You can also add French as a second keyboard layout in Windows, macOS and ChromeOS without changing the hardware.
Check the warranty. Manufacturer warranties usually run one year in Canada, and Amazon.ca’s return window is separate from the maker’s warranty. Keep the receipt and the box until the return period ends.
Timing matters too. Canadian retailers cut laptop prices most often in the back-to-school season, on Black Friday (Nov. 27, 2026) and on Boxing Day. Students can also check the education pricing that Apple and some Windows makers offer on their own Canadian stores.

How we chose
We started with Amazon.ca’s laptop best-seller list and searched for laptops shipped and sold by Amazon.ca, then picked five across price levels from well-known brands. We compared listed specs with manufacturer spec pages, checked independent lab results from Notebookcheck where available, and read customer reviews for the most common praise and complaints. We did not test these laptops ourselves. We left out laptops sold only by third-party sellers and generic brands with few reviews.
