England captain Harry Brook hit the fastest double century in men’s one-day international history on Thursday, but Sri Lanka still chased down 430 to win by two wickets with one ball to spare in a tri-series match in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, The Guardian and The Associated Press reported.
Brook reached 200 in 114 balls, beating the record India’s Shubman Gill set against the West Indies earlier this month, and was out for 202 on the final ball of England’s innings. The AP said he hit 10 sixes and 21 fours as England made 429 for four, its fourth-highest ODI total and the first ODI double century by an England batter.
Sri Lanka slipped to 24 for two in reply but came back behind Pavan Rathnayake’s 130, Avishka Fernando’s 97 and 97 from Dasun Shanaka, who hit eight sixes. With eight runs needed in the final over, Josh Tongue bowled two batters with consecutive deliveries before Janith Liyanage hit a six down the ground to finish 61 not out, The Guardian reported.
The Guardian said it was the second-highest successful chase in ODI history, behind South Africa’s 438 against Australia in 2006.
“It was a nice innings; unfortunately it doesn’t mean anything now,” Brook said, according to The Guardian.
Joe Root passed 8,000 ODI runs on his way to 69, and Will Jacks hit 66 not out off 30 balls. England has lost both of its games in the three-team series, which also includes host Pakistan, and faces questions after leaving out leg-spinner Adil Rashid.
Earlier this year, India won the Twenty20 World Cup with a 96-run win over New Zealand. Before that tournament, Sri Lanka Cricket asked Pakistan to reconsider a boycott of its World Cup game against India.
