Canadian singer-songwriter Bryan Adams released a new single called Lake Ontario on Wednesday, a track that criticizes U.S. President Donald Trump’s August executive order changing the name of the lake.
The song, released Oct. 28, is the latest from Adams’s upcoming album How’s It Goin’, due Nov. 6 on BAD Records, according to coverage by CTV News, the Globe and Mail and Rolling Stone Canada.
Adams never names Trump in the song, but coverage reads it as a response to the executive order. Rolling Stone Canada described it as taking aim at “political distractions.” The Globe and Mail said Adams berates geographical renamings in the track.
The lyrics trace the lake’s history, from its glacial formation and Indigenous stewardship to European exploration and industrial development, according to the reports. They also reference the Iran conflict and the Epstein files.
The album has been described in a release as Adams’s musical love letter to Canada. Another recent patriotic single from the record, 51st State, is also on the album.
The song also drew a connection to another Canadian band. At a Toronto show on Aug. 29, Blue Rodeo invited the crowd to sing the Lake Ontario line from its 1993 song Hasn’t Hit Me Yet, according to the coverage.
Search interest in the song surged in Canada through Wednesday and Thursday, and the title was among the top trending searches in Google Trends Canada.
