NEWARK, N.J. – Jack Hughes scored twice and the New Jersey Devils beat the Edmonton Oilers 4-3 in a shootout on Tuesday night, ending Edmonton’s three-game winning streak.
The teams were tied 3-3 after regulation and played a scoreless overtime, according to ESPN’s box score. A wire report said Arseny Gritsyuk scored in the fourth round of the shootout for the decisive goal, and that Connor Hellebuyck stopped Kasperi Kapanen’s attempt to end it.
Hellebuyck, acquired from the Winnipeg Jets on Oct. 23, improved to 3-0-0 with New Jersey in his first home start for the club. Tristan Jarry started in goal for the Oilers.
Bouchard opens the scoring
Evan Bouchard gave Edmonton a 1-0 lead at 8:29 of the first period, with assists to Mattias Ekholm and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, per ESPN.
New Jersey took over in the second. Connor Brown tied it on the power play at 7:42. Hughes put the Devils ahead at 14:50 with an assist to Dougie Hamilton and Jesper Bratt, then scored again on the power play at 15:35, with Brown and Nico Hischier assisting, to make it 3-1.
Nugent-Hopkins answered on the power play at 18:16 to pull Edmonton within one. Bouchard and Kapanen drew the assists.
Draisaitl ties it
Leon Draisaitl tied the game 3-3 on the power play one minute into the third period. Kapanen and Connor McDavid assisted, according to ESPN.
Neither team scored again in the third period or overtime, and the game went to a shootout.
Edmonton had won its previous three games, including a win over the New York Rangers on the weekend. Earlier this week, Nugent-Hopkins was on track to pass Kevin Lowe as the franchise’s all-time leader in games played.
Neither source included post-game quotes. Saves totals differed between the sources and are not reported here.
