BC’s Health Minister says we can expect doses of the COVID-19 vaccine in the Interior “very soon.”
The initial shipments of Pfizer’s vaccine are heading to the mainland. Four trays of the vaccine are on their way to BC. Each tray has 975 doses of the vaccine and a person needs two doses for it to be effective. Two trays are heading to the Vancouver Coastal Health region and the other two are headed to Fraser Health.
Speaking on NL Newsday, Adrian Dix says thousands more doses are expected in the weeks that follow plus we should soon see the Moderna vaccine roll out.
“And the place we’re going to start in Interior Health is the same place as in Vancouver Coastal Health. Health workers in Long Term Care, some health care workers in COVID-19 units and emergency units and ICU’s and resident of long term care. Those are the priorities.”
“And you’re going to see that in Interior Health as soon as possible. We have had some suggestions that we might get more than we’re expecting now and if that’s the case obviously we’ll be doing more. By the end of March, under our agreement with the federal government right now BC is expecting enough doses for about 380,000 people.”
Dix says that is 8% of the BC population which means the measures are going to have to be in place for a some time.
It is also noted that with seven different vaccine candidates, record keeping will be important to make sure people are getting the right vaccines when they go in to inoculated. That said, Dix doesn’t believe this is much more complex than any other vaccination program.
