
Health officials recorded 1,158 new cases of COVID-19 were identified over the weekend, marking a continued drop in BC’s infection rate.
Spread across the three days, 408 cases were recorded on Saturday, 473 on Sunday and 277 on Monday.
The 277 cases are the lowest single-day case count since late October.
Dr. Bonnie Henry also said public health has stepped up its surveillance of the South African and UK variants of COVID-19.
So far, 14 cases of the variant first identified in the UK have been confirmed here along with four of the variant first seen in South Africa.
Seven UK variant cases were confirmed over the weekend, including the first in Interior Health.

There are now 4,134 active cases of the novel coronavirus in BC Of those, 289 patients are in hospital, including 79 in critical care.
Henry also reported 21 deaths attributed to the virus over the weekend, bringing BC’s death toll to over 1,200 people.
A total of 7,240 people were self-isolating after possible exposures.
Henry acknowledged that BC has limited supplies of vaccines to start the month of February, but more is expected by the end of the week.
“We hope and we’ve been told we are increasing our supply,” she said.
