More than 148-thousand surgeries in Ontario have been postponed since the COVID-19 pandemic began. It could take more than a year-and-a-half to get caught up with them.
A study in the Canadian Medical Association Journal suggests it will take a year and a half or longer to clear the backlog.
The research took into account new surgeries that could be added to the list, a subsequent wave of the virus and staff fatigue due to additional workloads to fight the first wave.
Hospitals were directed in March to begin cancelling elective and non-emergency procedures. Some hospitals were able to resume some of those procedures in May.
