Diamondbacks’ Corbin Carroll day-to-day with hyperextended right elbow

The Arizona Diamondbacks have sustained an injury to a key player as they fight for a wild-card spot.

Corbin Carroll hyperextended his right elbow playing against the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday night and is day-to-day, Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo told reporters after the game.

Carroll struck out swinging in the bottom of the seventh inning and appeared to wince in pain. He stayed in the field for the top of the eighth but was pinch-hit for by Jorge Barrosa in the bottom of the ninth.

The 25-year-old outfielder has 14 home runs, 47 RBIs, 10 stolen bases and an .825 OPS in 95 games this season. He also leads MLB with 10 triples and has led the National League in triples in each of the last three seasons — the first three years of his career.

Carroll hasn’t missed time due to injury this season but did undergo off-season surgery for a broken hamate bone in his right hand.

The Diamondbacks went on to beat the Cardinals 8-7 in extra innings after Nolan Arenado hit a game-tying two-run homer in the eighth and Max Kepler hit a walk-off RBI double in the 10th.

Arizona moved to 51-48 with the win and now sits 0.5 games back of the NL’s final wild-card spot.
