Facebook is both benefiting and battered by the coronavirus impact – MarketWatch

Few companies show the whipsaw impact of coronavirus than Facebook Inc., which is benefiting from and being battered by the pandemic.

In a blog late Tuesday, the social-networking giant said total messaging across the platform’s services the last month has increased 50% in countries ravaged by the virus, with video messaging on Messenger and WhatsApp more than doubling. In Italy, time spent on Facebook has soared 70% since it was hard hit by the crisis. But the company warned it is not immune from an online-advertising pullback by many of its customers, especially small businesses.

finds itself in a delicate position with the onslaught of the deadly virus: As COVID-19 forces more people indoors and wreaks havoc on the economy, it is driving record use on the social network while at the same time robbing it of advertising revenue in the short term.

“In a time of disaster, people rely more on social services more… we are seeing surges in traffic, especially in areas most affected,” Zuckerberg said in a conference call with reporters last week. “People want to stay connected while being asked to maintain social distancing and eliminate loneliness.”

Daily calls on WhatsApp and Messenger have doubled, reaching levels normally seen only on New Year’s Eve, he added. (Facebook does not monetize Messenger and WhatsApp at the same rate as its core and Instagram businesses.)

Then there is the flip side. A large chunk of advertisers who brought in $70.7 billion in sales for Facebook last year are small businesses most at risk during the expected COVID-19 economic slowdown.

will suffer losses because of their reliance on small businesses that advertise,” eMarketer senior analyst Jasmine Enberg told MarketWatch. “[Small businesses] will pull back ad spend. In the longer term (full year), they are in a much better position than smaller media companies for advertising.”

said it now expects an operating loss in its current first quarter, and a dip in revenue because of COVID-19. Twitter had expected operating income to be between break even and $30 million, and total revenue of $825 million to $885 million for the quarter.

According to the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus website, countries most afflicted by COVID-19 are China, the largest countries in Europe, the U.S., Iran, and South Korea. The U.S. (including Canada) and Europe accounted for 51% of Facebook’s advertising revenue last quarter, FBN Securities analyst Shebly Seyrafi said in a note Wednesday, “so clearly the majority of FB’s advertising revenue is being pressured currently,” he wrote.

Facebook reported $21.08 billion in fourth-quarter revenue, nearly all of it from advertising.

“FB’s concession… cause us to lower our FQ1 revenue growth forecast for FB from $18.60B (up 23% Y/Y) to $17.5B (up 16% Y/Y),” Seyrafi wrote. While he maintains an Outperform rating on Facebook, he lowered his price target to $220 from $245.

Seyrafi further reduced his earnings per share estimate to $1.79 from $2.04. He models Facebook revenue to grow 16% to 17% in fiscal 2020 before accelerating to 19% in 2021.

Analysts polled by FactSet, meanwhile, have lowered their estimates on Facebook’s sales and earnings. Average revenue expectations were $18.56 billion at the end of 2019, but have declined to $18.27 billion as of March 25. Estimates for advertising, which accounts for nearly all of Facebook’s sales, have declined from $18.37 billion to $18.13 billion in that time period, according to FactSet.

Earnings expectations from FactSet were $1.95 per share at the end of 2019. As of March 25, they were $1.91 per share.

Shares of Facebook were down 3% in early afternoon trading. For the year, they are down 24%.

Important updates regarding the Bob-Birnie Arena

The City of Pointe-Claire would like to inform you that the Bob-Birnie arena will be closed for its annual maintenance as of Monday, April 29. The Annex rink will reopen to the public on Monday, May 13, and the arena’s Main rink will be accessible as of Monday, June 3.

Public skating will resume on May 13, and the summer public activities programming will begin on June 3 when both rinks have reopened to the public.

In addition to the annual maintenance of the facility, two renovation projects are also scheduled to start at the same time:

Installation of new sound systems

The City will be replacing its current sound systems in both the Main rink and Annex rink, to offer arena visitors a better overall experience, whether watching from the stands or participating in on-ice activities. This project is expected to be conducted throughout the month of May.

Renovation of locker rooms in the Main Rink

The City will also be renovating the five locker rooms located in the Main rink, to bring up to date the amenities currently available to participants. These renovations are expected to begin in early May and will be completed by mid-August.

Surprise Apple Event Hints at First New iPads in Years – CNET

We haven’t seen a new iPad in years, but Apple seems likely to change that in just a few weeks. All signs point to the release of new iPad models in the first week of May.

This morning, I received an email invite for a virtual Apple event, scheduled for May 7 at 7 a.m. PT (10 a.m. ET). The invite, which says “Let Loose,” shows a drawing of a hand holding an Apple Pencil. Considering the iPad is the only device that uses the Pencil — that doesn’t leave much to the imagination.

Apple’s been expected to release new OLED-screened iPad Pros with newly designed Pencils and Magic Keyboard cases. New iPad Airs are also expected, including a larger-screened 12.9-inch model. Apple’s iPad Air lineup tends to be slightly redesigned versions of previous-model iPad Pros, so just look to the M2 iPad Pro lineup for a sense of what the next Airs could be. These would be the first new iPads since the iPad Pro M2 model arrived in late 2022.
