Green Party of Canada leadership race down to one candidate

The Green Party of Canada (GPC) has just one candidate remaining in its race to find a new leader after Nira Dookeran announced her withdrawal from the race earlier this week.

Dookeran, who is president of the Green Party’s Ottawa South Electoral District Association, said she was stepping away from the race for family and personal reasons.

“For personal and family reasons, after much soul-searching, I have decided to withdraw from the Green Party of Canada Leadership Contest,” said Dookeran. “I want to sincerely thank all the volunteers, donors, friends and supporters who came forward over the last 12 weeks to contribute to our campaign. It has been an inspiring, energizing, and humbling experience to work alongside so many talented, dedicated Greens for a cause we all share.”

Dookeran, who was a 12 year member of the party, said that she hoped the party would work to empower local communities.

“I hope that, as a Party, we can strengthen our efforts to empower our members, who know their own people, communities, ridings, and regions most intimately,” Dookeran’s statement reads. “In this way, we can channel the tremendous energy of People Power on the ground to highlight the values, issues and priorities we all share in common—from protecting the planet and all our interconnected ecosystems to strengthening our democracy to leading a clean energy and economic transition. It’s effective collaboration and teamwork at all levels that will make this vision a reality.”

Dookeran was confirmed as one of two candidates for the Green Party leadership on August 5, the other being former Kitchener Centre MP Mike Morrice.

Morrice, who served as MP from 2021 to 2025, served as party deputy leader from November of 2025 until August 5, 2026.

He has yet to make an official statement on Dookeran’s withdrawal from the race.

Morrice did previously complete rabble’s leadership questionnaire, where he gave his views on the climate crisis, Alberta separation, economic inequality and more.

The Green Party’s Leadership Contest Commission and Federal Council say that they are currently examining next steps for the leadership race to ensure it meets the party’s constitutional requirements.

The party thanked Dookeran for putting her name forward.

“The GPC thanks Nira for putting her name forward and for the time, energy and commitment she brought to the leadership race. The Party also thanks her campaign team, volunteers and supporters for their work throughout her candidacy,” their statement reads.
