We believe that Newfoundland and Labrador needs investment to ensure the well-being of its most vulnerable people and the resiliency of its economy in a zero-carbon future. It is clear that subsidies for oil and gas exploration are incompatible with Canada’s climate commitments.
Accordingly, we sent the following to the Liberal leadership candidates:
Andrew Furey, in your campaign statements, you have said that you wish to “redefine our own natural resources” and that you will pursue a “new collaborative deal” with Ottawa.
Can you assure us that this will not include asking Ottawa for industry bail-outs for further exploration for oil and gas?
We have yet to receive a response from either candidate.
We look forward to your answer and hearing more about on your plans for the economy and jobs in the inevitable transition from our dependency on the oil and gas industry.
John Abbott, in your campaign platform, you undertake to “put government in rapid response mode to help the private sector recover the jobs lost to COVID-19, maintain existing jobs, and create new ones.”
Can you assure us that this will not include asking Ottawa for industry bail-outs for further exploration for oil and gas?
We look forward to your answer and hearing more about on your plans for the economy and jobs in the inevitable transition from our dependency on the oil and gas industry.
We have yet to receive a response from either candidate. Sadly, from recent headlines (such as in The Telegram July 24), we see that it is politics as usual, not the serious conversation that we need to be having now.
