The Large Urban Mayors Caucus of Ontario seems encouraged by the news that the federal government is granting provinces a share of $19-billion dollars to help deal with restarting their respective economies.
Guelph Mayor — and LUMCO chair — Cam Guthrie says both the federal and provincial governments have demonstrated that they understand the fiscal realities facing municipalities.
Premier Doug Ford also pledged to match any federal dollars in key spending areas, like transit.
Of the $19-billion dollars, Ontario will get $7-billion, with the stimulus package helping to cover municipalities facing multi-million dollar deficits.
The region is facing a $17-million shortfall by the end of the year due to pandemic costs.
