A meteor was spotted over Peterborough Saturday night.
Social media users reported that it happened in the late evening — a large, glowing object crossed the night sky over the city.
A reader caught footage of the meteor on her Amazon Ring doorbell, and shared it with The Examiner.
“My girlfriend first saw it and was like ‘look, a shooting star,” one person posted on Reddit shortly after it happened.
Another wrote: “I was sitting outside and saw it fly all the way across the sky. Like nothing I’ve ever seen before!”
One person added that the meteor appeared to be “quite low, with bursts of flames,” while another Reddit user mentioned seeing it from Highway 115.
Reddit users post under screen names, and rarely use their real names.
A Toronto motorist recorded video of the fireball as it streaked over the 401.
The meteor was the second one spotted Saturday. Reports indicate a fireball was spotted at about 3:30 a.m. It apparently hit the ground near Niagara Falls.
The one created a sonic book as it entered the atmospehere, the Toronto Star reported.
The Minor Planet Center (MPC) said a fast-moving object, designated 2022 WJ1, was spotted at the Mt. Lemmon Survey, which is at an observatory in the Catalina Mountains in Arizona.
“The observations triggered a warning of an imminent impact. Seven observatories were able to observe the sub-meter object before it impacted the earth’s atmosphere on Nov. 19 at approximately 08:27 UTC (3:27 a.m. eastern standard time) over Brantford, Ontario, Canada.”
People on social media posted comments about hearing the boom in Niagara, Hamilton, Oakville and other places.
Once a meteor hits the ground it’s reclassified as a meteorite, and they can be valuable if found and confirmed.
A Toronto Star article explains more about that.
